Dalai Lama wraps up his visit to Poland

Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama wraps up his visit to Poland today. He spent one eventful week in the country, visiting Warsaw, Krakow, Gdansk and Wroclaw, participated in the 25th anniversary celebrations of Lech Walesa's Nobel Peace Prize, met privately with Poland's president Lech Kaczynski and talked to Polish parliamentarians. The visit was widely received as the reiteration of Poland's support to the cause of Free Tibet.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama is visiting the Republic of Poland from 5 to 12 December 2008, at invitations from the Lech Walesa Institute, the Jagiellonian University, the Mayor and City Council of Wroclaw, the Speaker of the Senate of the Republic of Poland, the Polish Parliamentary Group for Tibet, and the Mayor of the City of Warsaw. During the visit His Holiness will also meet with representatives of Buddhist groups in Poland, hold a special prayer meeting with Archbishop Golebiewski and nuns of the historic Carmelitan Convent, and meet with members of the Tibetan Community in Poland.

We are writing in regards to your statement made before the Beijing Olympics about solidarity actions with Tibetans during the Games. We would like to inform you that Polish weightlifter Szymon Kolecki made a visible sign of solidarity, as he had pledged to do before the Games. We hope you will express your support for his gesture, in accordance with your statement before the Games (“I would like to encourage the athletes, men and women, to look at things as they are, and not to turn away”). To our knowledge, he is the only athlete who made such a symbolic gesture.

Candles for Tibet
